MEDIA BIOGRAPHY

Geoff Schumann is known by many as one of the leading African Caribbean comedians in Britain. The former comprehensive school teacher and qualified youth worker has smoothly moved from one public arena to another. Geoff, a trained humanities school teacher and qualified youth work trainer. Geoff taught in the London Boroughs of Ealing, Hammersmith and Fulham. Brent and Lambeth for 7 years.  Geoff also taught media studies for a year in an adult education college. After a spell of teaching in Africa and the Caribbean he was a visiting lecturer to Reading University, Schumann then began to pursue a career in the media and stand up comedy.


Geoff’s media career began on a community radio station in 1994. He then went onto to train at the BBC radio school based in the White City. In 1996 he became a weekly contributor on the BBC’s GLR radio station later renamed BBC London. Within 9 months Schumann was snapped up by Choice FM radio to host the breakfast show.


Geoff was rewarded with the Outstanding Contribution to Comedy Award in 2001 at the Black Comedy Awards. Geoff was also voted Youth Personality of the Year at the prestigious Voice Newspaper Awards in 1999. In October 2016 he was rewarded with an outstanding contribution award by Luton’s cultural heritage society


Geoff Schumann numerous television appearances span comedy, current affairs, documentaries and drama. His comedic skills have been seen on Club Class, Nights Out at the Empire, The Real McCoy, Get it On and The Stand Up Show. He was also a contributor on BBC1’s tribute to Lenny Henry and Sky 1’s, Celebrities Behaving Badly.  His acting skills were seen in The Bill, Minder and Casualty.


In August 1996 Geoff was the subject of a BBC2 documentary entitled ‘The Day That Changed My Life'. The programme chronicled his transition from teaching to show business.


Geoff’s comedy style is thought provoking, topical and wickedly funny. Geoff is also a gifted playwright. In 1997 he wrote and starred in a revue comedy sketch show called Waiting to Inhale. The box office hit show was staged at the Theatre Royal Stratford East and at the time it was the highest grossing attendance in the theatres 100 year history.


From August 1997 until March 2004  Geoff hosted the highly popular breakfast show on Choice FM.  He also had the highest ever rated solo programme on the station on Saturday mornings. This was called ‘The Schumann Shuffle’. This was a mixture of both music and comedy whilst encompassing an hour-long topical phone-in discussion programme


Since 2002 Geoff has been a regular contributor and reviewer on Channel 5 News. He has also been a political pundit on Newsnight, Kilroy and The London Programme. In October 2003 Geoff wrote and presented a hard hitting documentary for Dispatches on Channel 4. The gritty documentary, called Thug Life explored the escalating tensions between inner city youths in Britain.


Geoff has written for both television and Theatre. He has co-written material with his late great friend the excellent Felix Dexter


Geoff's radio personality has won him critical acclaim and new audiences at BBC Radio London, 94.9 FM  and he won a Sony award for his breakfast show when he later moved to Life FM. Geoff currently hosts a breakfast show of topical chat, music and satire on Unique 101.2fm or www.uniqueradio.org on Thursday mornings. Geoff has also been the television critic for The Voice Newspaper and BBC London radio.
